Nerve conduction studies

Nerve conduction studies are useful to diagnose conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome or neuropathies. These are accomplished by sending brief electrical impulses along nerves of the arms or legs.

A needle study (EMG) may be required. This is done by inserting a needle in different muscles. This is a useful test in radiculopathies (nerve root disease) and muscle diseases.

Warm skin ensures accurate readings, so in our lovely Brisbane winter, please keep your arms and legs warm for this test. It is also useful to wear loose-fitting clothes that go easily above the elbows and knees.
